Valve bags have a pre-formed valve opening at the top or bottom. During filling, the packaging machine inserts the filling tube into the valve; the material auto-fills and seals under positive pressure. The valve self-closes when the tube is withdrawn.

Open-mouth bags have an open top; after filling, the top is folded and sewn shut or heat-sealed.

- Lower cost: Simpler bag structure, lower unit price
- Flexible for small batches: Adapts well to multi-product, low-volume production
Limitations
- Slow filling speed, significant dust generation
- Requires extra closure step (fold + sew or heat seal)
- Sealing quality varies with human factors
