For hygroscopic powders such as cement, fertilizers, and certain food ingredients, moisture protection is essential in packaging design. The three mainstream moisture-barrier approaches each have distinct characteristics.

Option 1: Lamination (BOPP-laminated Woven Fabric)

Lamination heat-bonds a BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) film to the PP woven fabric surface, typically 18–25 μm thick, providing excellent barrier properties.

Advantages

  • Outstanding barrier: MVTR can drop below 5 g/m²/day
  • Smooth surface with excellent printability for high-quality branding
  • The film layer adds UV resistance
  • Compatible with standard valve bag manufacturing

Disadvantages

  • Harder to recycle (BOPP and PP layers are difficult to separate)
  • Cost approximately 15–25% higher than standard woven fabric

Option 2: Coating (PE Extrusion Coating)

Coating applies a uniform PE (polyethylene) layer onto the woven fabric via an extruder, typically 15–30 g/m².

Advantages

  • Consistent, uniform coating with reliable barrier performance
  • PE and PP are both polyolefins — theoretically recyclable together
  • Moderate cost, about 10–15% cheaper than lamination

Disadvantages

  • Requires primer before printing; lower gloss than BOPP lamination
  • Thin coating may develop pinholes, affecting long-term barrier

Option 3: Inner Liner (PE Inner Bag)

An inner liner places a separate PE bag inside the woven outer bag, creating a double-layer structure.

Advantages

  • Layers are separate; inner liner can theoretically be replaced if damaged
  • PE liner can be recycled independently
  • No impact on outer bag appearance, suitable for pre-printed bags

Disadvantages

  • Double-bag structure increases labor cost
  • Inner liner requires additional deployment step
  • For equivalent barrier performance, cost usually exceeds the first two options

For purely functional moisture barriers with sustainability considerations, PE coating offers the best value.
